Pattern of Examination

M.Sc Biotechnology

The question paper for the Entrance Examination will be of three hours duration and divided into two parts:

Part-A will have multiple choice type questions at the level of 10+2 in the subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology.

The Candidates will be required to attempt 60 questions : Total marks for Part A will be (60 questions x 1 mark each) of 60 marks. There will be negative marking and for each wrong answer, ½ (half) mark will be deducted.

(10 questions).

Part-B will also have multiple-choice questions of Bachelor’s level requiring thinking and analysis. There will be questions from Physics, Mathematics, Biology (e.g., Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics and Molecular Biology) and Chemistry. The candidates will be required to attempt 60 questions. Total marks for Part B will be 60 questions x3 marks each = 180 marks. There will be negative marking and for each wrong answer one mark will be deducted.

Question paper for Entrance Examination will be of 3-hours duration consisting of Two Streams: (i) Technology

(i) Technology Stream :

IIT JAM

IIT JAM is annually conducted by one of the many IITs, for admission into two programs of Biological sciences and Biotechnology leading to M.Sc and Integrated Ph.D of various institutes like IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IISc Bangalore.

Courses: M.Sc Biotechnology, Integrated Ph.D in Biollogical Sciences and M.Sc – Ph.D dual degree in Environmental Science and Engineering.

Selection Criteria: Written Test

Three different patterns of questions as follows:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) : Each MCQ type question has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer.

Multiple Select Questions (MSQ): Each MSQ type question is similar to MCQ but with a difference that there may be one or more than one choice(s) that are correct out of the four given choices.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions: For each NAT type question, the answer is a signed real number which needs to be entered using the virtual keypad on the monitor.

AIIMS

All India Institute of Medical Science conduct entrance exam every year for admission to many of its PG courses.

Eligibility Criteria : The candidate must have secured 60% for general category and 55% for SC/ST category in aggregate in the qualifying exam.

Syllabus and the pattern of exam : There is no prescribed syllabus for the exam

Pattern: The question paper will be of 90 minutes duration consisting of 90 MCQs carrying 90 marks in total. There will be a minimum cut off of 60% as a condition of eligibility in the competitive entrance exam.

Notification of the exam: March- April

Exam Date: 9th July, 2016

Results: 13th July, 2016

TIFR/NCBS

Courses:

  • PhD (NCBS and TIFR), seats: Variable
  • Integrated PhD (NCBS and TIFR), seats: 6
  • M.Sc. by Research (only at TIFR), seats: 6
  • M.Sc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation (only at NCBS)

Selection Criteria: Written test followed by an interview

Written test will cover basic topics in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. There are 60 MCQs having distribution like; Phy-15, Che-15, Bio-15, Maths-15.

Interviews in the NCBS and DBS (TIFR) admission process for PhD/IntPhD programmes are common up to the Entrance Test. Separate interviews will be held at Bangalore and Mumbai. The DBS conducts a single interview in Mumbai in Feb/March 2016 NCBS interviews are in two stages held over a three day period. These are typically scheduled in May/June 2016.

Syllabus : There is no prescribed syllabus for the exam.

IISc Bangalore

IISc Course offered : Integrated Ph.D in Biological Sciences

Eligibility : Candidate should have scored a minimum of 60% in the qualifying exam.

Selection Criteria : Written test followed by an Interview

Pattern of Written test : There is a MCQ based paper having a total of 100 questions, where about 80% of the questions are from biology subject.

Interview: All students who meet a certain cut-off in the entrance exam are called for the interview. The interviews are conducted by a panel of faculty from all departments of the Biological Sciences division.
